Diablo 3: The attack speed modifier on armor is not working correctly

As a Demon Hunter in Diablo 3 I noticed that a lot of the legendary armor pieces have attack speed bonuses on them.  Thrilled to be able to increase my attack speed further, I bought a few of the cheaper items.

Right now, the non-legendary items with attack speed increases on them are:

  • Weapons (Bows, crossbows, 1-hand crossbows)
  • Rings
  • Amulets
  • Quivers
  • Gloves

With legendary items you can expand attack speed to these armor slots:

  • Boots
  • Belt
  • Leggings
  • Helm
  • Bracers

Unfortunately, there's a bug in the game that has yet to be fixed (as of 6/6/12) where certain legendary armor pieces do not actually increase your character sheet's 'attacks per second' value. This is a problem, because most don't know about this bug and attack speed is critical to advancing in Inferno as a Demon Hunter.

Which items are right?  There's an easy way to tell which items will work with the attack speed modifier right now:

  • If an item says "Increases attack speed by XX%" and it is not a weapon, it is bugged!
  • If an item says "Attack speed increased by XX%", it works as intended.

All the more confusing, some legendaries can have either one of these stats on them.  For example, Boj Anglers can have either of the above stats, so you have to make sure you're buying the un-bugged version.  If you'd like to figure out if an item can have the correct "Attack speed increased by XX%" stat, go to the Diablo 3 items site and filter by "Attack Speed" on the slot you want.  This is also a good way to figure out which items on the Auction House you should search for.
